Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the NUB?

THiiN Line's Network Utility Box is an internet appliance for small businesses, SOHOs, and eventually the average home. It can be mounted on the wall in your basement, or it can sit on your desk next to your answering machine. It connects to an Internet Service Provider using a V.34/56k modem (eventually ISDN, ADSL, and cable modems) and provides a local-area wireless network so that PCs, laptops, and Internet appliances can be connected to the Internet simply by adding a low-cost radio component or adapter.

  2. When will it be available?

We have not launched the product yet. At the Demo98 conference, we demonstrated the Net Utility Box technology that is the basis for the product.

Service Providers interested in deploying an Internet Access service based on the NUB should contact us immediately via sales@thiin.com.

If you are interested as an end-user, you'll have to wait until there is an Internet Access service deployed using the NUB. We do not have any plans to distribute this product via retail channels. Sorry!

  3. How much will it cost?

We have not announced the product and its pricing. It will depend on the wide-area network connection and radio choice as well as on volume.

End-user pricing will depend on how the product is sold which could be via a leasing arrangement such as is done with cable boxes. The end-user pays an installation fee and a monthly service fee, but the cable box is owned and maintained by the service provider.

  4. How will the product be distributed?

Large service providers such as telcos, cable companies, and electricity distributers (anyone currently servicing your home) will distribute the NUB like cable companies distribute cable boxes. When you order cable service, the cable guy comes and installs a cable box that gives you access to lots of TV channels. When you order "Internet service", the Internet guy will come and install a NUB that gives you wireless Internet access.

We currently do not have any plans to distribute this product via retail channels.

  5. What processor does it use? What radio? What operating system? How much memory? ....

The NUB is an appliance and like most of your home appliances, it is defined by what it does rather than what is in it. The answer to most of the questions above is 'enough'. The radio is faster than the wide-area network connection. The operating system is invisible to the end-user. It doesn't run applications at all, so it has an embedded processor.
